Everyone who auditions will be given a role!
*Actors are asked to attend one audition time slot (or submit an audition video) and attend the dance audition to be considered for a dance role

We are seeking a large, diverse cast of talented young performers with strong acting, singing, and movement abilities.

Matilda Wormwood – An extraordinary and brilliant girl with a sharp mind and vivid imagination. Strong actor and singer.
Miss Honey – Matilda’s kind and nurturing teacher. Warm, expressive voice.
Miss Trunchbull – The monstrous headmistress of Crunchem Hall. Played by a male or female actor with strong comedic timing and character work.
Mr. Wormwood – Matilda’s sleazy, loud, and not-so-bright father.
Mrs. Wormwood – Matilda’s self-absorbed and dramatic mother. Needs confidence and flair.
Bruce – A lovable classmate of Matilda’s with a big appetite (especially for cake!).
Lavender – Matilda’s best friend. Bubbly, brave, and fun.
Amanda, Nigel, Eric, Alice, Hortensia, and other School Kids – Strong ensemble roles with featured moments
The Escapologist & The Acrobat – Magical storytelling characters in Matilda’s imagination.
The Children’s Entertainer, Doctor, Judge, Sergei & Henchmen, and Parents – Supporting roles with personality and presence
Ensemble – Dancers, singers, and energetic performers of all types!
🎭 Matilda Jr. Audition FAQ for Parents
1. What ages are eligible to audition?
Auditions are open to performers in grades K–12. We’re looking for a fun, enthusiastic, and diverse cast of all ages and experience levels!
2. Does my child need previous experience to audition?
No experience needed! We welcome first-time performers as well as returning stars. Everyone has a place at PYTMI.
3. Do parents need to stay during the audition?
Parents may stay or drop off. Most audition time slots are just 5 minutes long. The only exception is the dance audition on Sunday from 7:00–8:00 PM, which lasts 45 minutes.
4. When will we find out if they got a role?
Casting emails will be sent out by the end of the week following auditions. We do our best to get decisions out quickly!
5. What if we have a conflict with a rehearsal or audition time?
If you can’t attend in person, you may submit a video audition via email to megan@pytmi.com.
If you can no longer attend your in-person audition slot, please delete your SignUpGenius reservation so we can offer the spot to another actor.
All rehearsal conflicts must be submitted at the audition.
6. What is the rehearsal commitment?
Rehearsals take place at 328 Harriet St., Ypsilanti on the following days:
• Sundays (Dance Focus): 5:00–8:00 PM
• Mondays: 6:00–9:00 PM
• Wednesdays: 6:00–9:00 PM
Consistent attendance is essential, especially as we approach tech week.
7. What are the participation costs?
The participation fee is $300 per actor.
We always offer scholarships and payment plans—just reach out if needed. We’re committed to making theatre accessible for everyone.
8. Will everyone who auditions be cast?
Yes! We will cast as many actors as we can. While lead roles are limited, all auditioning performers will be cast and have a meaningful part in the production.
9. When and where are the performances?
Performances will take place at the Riverside Arts Center in Ypsilanti during one of the following weekends:
• December 5–7
• December 12–14
We plan to have two full casts, with each cast performing on its own weekend. Actors can request their preferred performance weekend at auditions.
10. What should my child bring to auditions?
• A 30–60 second song from a musical (bring a track or sing a cappella)
• A willingness to try something new!
• Comfortable clothes for movement if attending the dance audition
We provide everything else. Cold readings from the script may be given during the audition.
